In leafpad (gui application) I can type in japanese and when I switch to latin
dead keys are functional; the same doesn't work in rxvt-unicode, hence the
dirty hack (I run debian wheezy).
My problem affects every terminal emulator I tried (xterm, urxvt, lxterm) and
in this aspect it differs from OP's one (hence I will stop hijacking his
thread).
