Hi,

yes, I tried the +ut option.
And no, my /var/run/utmp is not world-writable:
  % ls -lrta /var/run/utmp
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 18432  6. Jan 08:32 /var/run/utmp

xterm seems to use a method which doesn't need write access to /var/run/utmp.
