I have no idea what xfwm4 does and what .desktop-files are, but every
decent window manager allows users to specify icons for programs and
program classes.

Well, either xfwm4 offers another way, or it is a poor wm, IMHO.
xterm/aterm/whateeverterm, and actually most of the programs I use set no
icon themselves but leave this to the user. Window managers not supporting
this well should be improved.
