how many colors can urxvt support?

Hello list
I have recently started using rxvt-unicode and really like some of the feature, like
beautiful looking fonts without as much overhead on my system compared to gnome-terminal
for example.
I use it in emacs on a Debian Sid, rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v5.3 - released: 2005-03-13
I would like to take advantage of the font-lock colors in emacs and am wondering
if this terminal is capable showing more than 8 normal colors and 8 bolded colors.
urxvt --help shows my version is compiled with:
options: xft,styles,combining,blink,iso14755,unicode3,encodings=eu+vn+jp+jp-ext+kr+zh+zh-ext,
fade,XPM,transparent,tint,utmp,menubar,XIM,scrollbars=plain+rxvt+NeXT+xterm,frills,
24bit,selectionscrolling,wheel,slipwheel,smart-resize,cursorBlink,
pointerBlank,XGetDefaults
and the colors are (I am assuming 8 regular weight, 8 bold?)
color0 thru color15
If I need to recompile the debian package to add something that is not
a problem but I dont know what to add.
I converted a jpeg to xpm and set it as the background and this
was no problem, showing a picture with lots of colors didnt
bother the terminal at all, so I am hoping it is some simple I need to
do, like set the colors up in ~/.Xdefaults?
right now in emacs I can only set those 8 colors + bold so any further
help would be appreciated.
Thank you!
