That is probably normal - there are different ways in which utmp is being
managed, depending on setup and permissions. I'll have a look, maybe a bug
crept it, but it's likely what rxvt & rxvt-unicode simply do.

That is interesting - how did you configure rxvt to use utempter? The code
should be virtually identical, and I didn't know rxvt supports utempter
(it doesn't, actually).
Does the slackware package contain a seperated patch? Or does it refer to
some patch? I'd prefer utempter if it is available, but I don't have the
energy to write that part myself.
