On which OS did you tets this, and how do you come to that conclusion? You
really ought to check again, I am sure the tab character didn't get
erased, otherwise rxvt-unicode wouldn't display it.
If you strace rxvt-unicode, you will likely see that the tab character does
not get erases on your OS.

An attempt at answering my question. I am sure you didn't check before
answering, and if you are _really_ sure about it, then you likely need
help :)

Again, why is it one of the most widely used apps? Neither vim, nor the
solaris, hp-ux nor IRIX vi's behave in the way you claim it does.
If your vi is one of the most widely used unix apps than you should
substantiate this unlikely claim.

For me, it's just spreading FUD, lying about facts and bluffing.

This is just too much. I never said anything like that. Look, claiming I
said things I clearly didn't is simply unacceptable.

Neither rxvt nor rxvt-unicode implement ecma-048. They implement vt100,
with ecma-048 extensions where it makes sense.
Anyways, this is the end of this fruitless "discussion". I won't talk to
people who argue by lying and intimidating.
I hope you can solve whichever problems you have with the outside world.
Good luck!
