This is not just my vi. All derivatives of the original vi behave
that way. If you're suggesting that they have done it wrong for around
25 years, and that your bright idea about the width of the tab cursor
just brought that bug to light, that's nothing but laughable. Just make
the cursor appear as it appears with any other sane terminal too. The
question is how well a modern terminal emulator can work with existing
applications. It is not what has to be changed in existing applications
in order to let them work with your terminal emulator.
