This may be because I compiled with -DDEBUGGING while attempting to narrow 
down the original problem.  If you get a chance, perhaps try that?  When I 
compile without -DDEBUGGING, this problem goes away (but obviously my original 
problem remains, still have to find a small enough test case to submit).
