An interesting question, but for some reason it does (at least on 5.10).
It's entirely possible there is a bug here somewhere.

(I really wasn't expecting it to do that - the code looked right at first,
and I had to backtrack from intercepting the close() syscall to figure out
why my pipes were going away too early)
