Problem retrieving information on callback

I was trying to follow the examples, but I just can't figure out how to
retrieve information about who messages are being sent from to a channel on
privmsg or publicmsg callbacks.
Also I'm unsure about whether irc_privmsg or publicmsg is the correct
callback to monitor messages in a channel. I was reading the examples and
the documentation carefully, but I just can't figure this out.
Could somebody please exaplin to me how to do that?
